FI C7 about the time frame limitation of Scope 3 GHG inventory

FI-C7 – Progress to Date: Targets that have already been achieved by the date they are submitted to the SBTi are not acceptable. The SBTi uses the year the target is submitted to the initiative (or the most recent completed GHG inventory) to assess forward-looking ambition. The most recent completed GHG inventory must not be earlier than two years prior to the year of submission.

The criteria above is explain Scope 1 and 2 Target Time Frame, especially in last sentence The most recent completed GHG inventory must not be earlier than two years prior to the year of submission.

Is there such a requirement for scope 3 GHG inventory?

Thanks for your question and your patience as we follow up.
There is more flexibility when it comes to scope 3 base years - but the same critieria would apply in that a scope 3 target that has already been achieved would not be considered valid. We recommend that FIs use the most recent year to act as the baseline portfolio as this will be most representative of their business. It also avoids the target achievement issue which is typically associated with targets that use an older base year.
